A press that runs consistent daily volume tends to develop predictable wear patterns that are easier to plan around, as covered in our other maintenance guides. A machine sitting idle for an extended period — a shop closure, a seasonal slowdown, or simply a gap between jobs — faces a different set of risks, ones that are just as real but less obvious because nothing is actively running to reveal a problem.

Why idle time isn’t “no wear” time

It’s tempting to assume a machine that isn’t running isn’t experiencing wear, but several components can actually degrade specifically because they’re sitting unused:

  • Rollers can develop flat spots from prolonged static pressure at a single contact point, rather than the even wear they’d experience under normal rotation
  • Toner can settle or clump inside cartridges left unused for extended periods, potentially affecting the first several prints after restart
  • Rubber and seal components in the fuser and transfer systems can degrade slightly differently under prolonged inactivity than under normal cyclical use
  • Dust accumulation continues regardless of whether the machine is running, and can settle into areas that would normally be kept clear by regular operation and airflow

Before an extended idle period begins

  • Consider running a final calibration cycle so the machine restarts from a known-good baseline rather than whatever state it was last left in
  • Check consumable levels — if toner or another consumable is very low going into an idle period, plan to replace it either before shutdown or immediately upon restart, since a low cartridge sitting unused for a long period isn’t ideal
  • Follow the machine’s proper shutdown sequence, as covered in our startup error code guide, rather than simply cutting power, to leave internal systems in a clean, predictable state

During the idle period

  • Maintain the room environment as though the machine were still in active use — temperature, humidity, and dust control shouldn’t be relaxed just because the machine isn’t running, as covered in our room setup guide
  • If power will be fully disconnected for a long period, follow the machine’s guidance on extended power-off storage if provided in its manual, since some models have specific recommendations for this scenario
  • Periodic power-on checks, if feasible during a very long idle period, can help catch an emerging issue early rather than discovering multiple problems at once when full operation resumes

Restarting after an extended idle period

  • Don’t jump straight into a full production job. Run a startup sequence, check for any startup errors as covered in our startup error code guide, and print a test pattern before committing to real client work
  • Expect the first few prints to potentially need extra attention — settled toner or a slightly-off calibration reading after prolonged inactivity is common and usually resolves after a calibration cycle and a few test prints
